The unnamed wreck ran aground on a reef just off Makawehi Point during a Hurricane years ago, foundering along a sandbar and the sharp reefs, giving the beach, known as Keoneloa (“the long sands”) in the native tongue, its colorful nickname.
The ship long ago broke in half, and only the stern and aft-castle remain. Presently, the remnants of the old ship are above the waves but that is not always the case. Reaching the wreck is nigh impossible this time of year especially, because of the strong waves and rip currents. However, seasoned swimmers, the lucky, the brave or the daft may try. Experienced surfers may paddle out on their boards, with a little luck or skill.
It is believed no one has ever successfully braved the dangerous waters to explore the old ship’s bowels when it was above the waves. It’s almost impossible to reach by boat due to the surrounding reefs and sand bars, and there’s always the possibility of sharks in the area, discouraging divers. Only those with a death wish would attempt snorkeling.

It should be noted for historical purposes, the location of the actual wreck Shipwreck Beach is named for was lost in a 1982 storm, and was a more modern ship.
